Sossusvlei Day Excursion |
Explore the world’s highest dunes on a 4WD tour and fly over Namibia’s dramatic landscape.
| Overview | |
Fly over the natural wonders in Namibia and you will see the world’s highest dunes. Although as dry as the Sahara, Namib is much richer when it comes to fauna, flora and landscape. Set off from the Swakopmund airstrip to the Kuiseb Canyon, running along a sea of flaming red and orange dunes and then on to Tsondabvlei. The landscape below - a golden sea dappled with red-orange triangular formations curving smoothly –is beautiful. After landing at Sesriem, set out on a 4WD to these escalating dunes, sometimes towering to a height of 305 metres and stretching 480 kilometres along the Namibia Coast at Sossusvlei. The colours and shadows of these mountains of sand change by the hour from beige to rust-red to purple. It almost feels like driving on a painter’s living canvas. After relishing a delicious lunch at the Sossusvlei lodge, you continue your flight, now flying over the forbidden Diamond area, and look out for the remains of the old diamond camps here. Proceeding over the ‘sea of sand’, you approach the shore at Conception Bay, geting a view of the remains of a German liner which blends beautifully with the powdery sands, making it seem as thoughthe ship is sailing through the desert itself. Moving northward, imagine the never-ending battle for supremacy between the sand and the sea as you fly over the “Lange Wand”, a 500 feet high dune rising from the coastline. At Sandwich Harbour, a large saltwater lagoon and home to an incredible variety of birds and one of south Africa’s biggest natural bird sanctuaries, you are welcomed by a number of birds. Fly over brilliant sand dunes that meet the Atlantic Ocean at Namibia’s only deep sea harbour, Walvis Bay and you will appreciate the beauty of the natural wonders in Namibia. After you land, relax at the recreational resorts-Dolphin Beach and Longbeach. So put on a comfortable pair of slippers and a T-shirt to enjoy Namibia at leisure!
