Sightseeing Tour of Biblical Sites in Jordan: Madaba and Mt.Nebo |
Tour of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Madaba
| Overview | |
Explore the ancient town of Madaba, aptly called the City of Mosaics. Medaba is most famous for its Byzantine era mosaic map on the floor of the ancient St. George Greek Orthodox Church. This map of the Holy Land depicts the region from Jerusalem to the Nile and covers all the major holy sites in the Middle East. Mount Nebo is one of the most revered holy sites of Jordan as it is believed to be the burial site of Moses. This 1,000m high mountain is located 10 kilometres northwest to the ancient town of Madaba. It is believed that this is the mountain from which Moses saw the Promised Land before he died. Mt. Nebo has been an important place of Christian pilgrimage for over 1,600 years. Byzantine mosaics from the early church have recently been uncovered, and a simple modern church has been built over them. Discover history, folklore and the foundations of the Christian faith on your tour of the holy sites in Madaba.
