Visit Miri city in northern Sarawak, the birthplace of the petroleum industry in Sarawak. The discovery of oil here in 1910 transformed Miri from a small village in the 1800s into the very cosmopolitan and modern town it is today. See the ‘Grand Old Lady’, Miri’s first oil well, located atop Canada Hill, which produced some 660,000 barrels of oil. Today, it has been gazetted as a Historical Monument. One of the biggest Taoist Temples in South East Asia - Lian Hua San (Lotus Hill) Temple – is in Miri. Other Miri attractions are the Crocodile Farm at Kuala Baram, the first and the largest crocodile farm in the northern region of Sarawak. Also worth visiting is the Sarawak Pottery Centre.
