During Hellenic and Roman times, this ancient city was famous for its library and the medical centre where Galen is said to have laid the foundation for medical practice. See the spectacular Theatre of Pergamon which is one of the steepest theatres in the world. It was constructed in the 3rd century B.C and has a capacity of 10,000 people.
