Sighisoara Medieval Citadel and Biertan Fortified Church |
Journey back to the Middle Ages with a visit to two of the most enduring Saxon settlements
| Overview | |
Spend a day wrapped up in the medieval atmosphere of ancient Transylvania. The Sighisoara Medieval Citadel and the Biertan Fortified Church are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and serve as living monuments to more than eight centuries of Saxon history. Enter Sighisoara’s iconic Clock Tower, which boasts a pyramidal roof crowned by a spire and offers magnificent panoramas of the citadel. See primitive instruments of persecution in Sighisoara’s Torture Room and learn about the dark prince of Wallachia that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The Church of Biertan is the most eminent of all the area’s fortified Saxon churches. Step inside a tiny room where couples pondering divorce were held prisoners until they resolved their differences. See the gravestones of the Lutheran bishops who used the church as their residence for more than 300 years.
