As it chughs its way up to Shimla from Kalka, crossing over 100 tunnels, the beauty of the Shimla hills unfolds gradually with each turn that the train takes.The Neo-Gothic Christ Church and the magnificent building of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (the erstwhile Viceregal Lodge) give Shimla a sort of quaint, old England feel. Existing in complete harmony with this colonial side of Shimla are some very old temples like the Jakhu Temple dedicated to the Hindu God, Hanuman. This eclectic mix of ethnic Indian culture and old world Britain makes Shimla a unique and delightful place to visit.
