Shanghai is one of the most metropolitan cities in China and yet the evidence of its centuries-old rich history can be seen everywhere. The 400-year old Yu Garden is reputed to be the most beautiful garden south of the Yangtze River. Also known as the Garden of Peace and Comfort, this beautifully reconstructed classical Chinese garden in the Old City was originally built during the Ming Dynasty. It has attractive Chinese pavilions, ponds, bridges and outdoor corridors. Shanghai Xin Tian Di is Shanghai’s a fashionable pedestrian street lined with Shikumen and modern architecture. Its uniqueness lies in its antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai. This is a new entertainment district with brick buildings along two square blocks that have been preserved and converted into trendy clubs, restaurants and boutiques. The Old City of Shanghai is one of China’s premier sights located in the city centre. Unlike central Shanghai where many old buildings were demolished to make room for modern skyscrapers, those in Shanghai Old City were preserved or reconstructed.The Old City features a bazaar, proving excellent options for food and snacks as well as souvenirs.
