The city of Rio de Janeiro is a city high on life, a city of beach worship, football, Samba and Carnival. And, towering above all this fun and frivolity stands Rio's ever-present, iconic landmark, the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Hill. The summit of Corcovado Hill, reachable by a quaint cog train that traverses the dense Tijuca Rainforest, offers fabulous views of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon beaches, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the city of Rio. The statue of Christ the Redeemer, perched on top of the hill, was recently elected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It rises more than 30m from a 6m pedestal and weighs approximately 700 tons. It is one of the tallest statues in the world. Appearing as a protector with outstretched arms, it is one of the most famous symbols of this lively city. Breathe the fresh mountain air from the viewing platform and soak in the stunning scenic vistas that lie before you.
