Saxon Transylvania: Brasov, Prejmer, Harman, Bran, Rasnov |
Explore the fortified churches, literary castles, and peasant citadels of Saxon Romania
| Overview | |
You only need one day to discover the exquisite churches and castles of the Transylvanian Saxons. Admire the menacing exterior and delicate interior of Prejmer’s fortified church, and learn why faith and defense were once so necessarily intertwined. Take in the 13th century art in the fortified church in Harman and imagine a time when archers manned the towers. Visit the Bran Castle, whose striking hilltop appearance formed the basis for the myth of Dracula, and later became the summer retreat of a queen. Finish your tour with a trip to Rasnov, site of the largest Peasant Citadel ever constructed in Eastern Europe. Its perched location and impenetrable fortifications bespeak a bygone history of foreign invasions.
