	The oldest city in Brazil and its first capital, Salvador is a thriving centre of Afro-Brazilian life. Considered the country’s soul and the birthplace of Brazilian culture, the local cuisine, music, dance and vibrant visual arts are all testaments to this pervasive African influence. The city is filled with churches, homes and forts that reflect stunning Portuguese architecture from the Baroque period. Take a historical tour of Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the interesting difference between the two 'parts' of Salvador - the Lower City and the Upper City. In the Lower City, are the old port and the commercial area with a complete and varied assortment of Brazilian arts and crafts at the Modelo Market. The Upper City can be reached by stone steps, alleyways or the famous Lacerda Elevator. This part of the city contains the old government buildings, the residential districts, museums, churches and much of the newer architecture.
