Fish River Canyon and Luderitz |
Get a sense of the sheer expanse of the 161 kilometres long Fish River Canyon on this tour.
| Overview | |
Admire the beauty of the second largest canyon in the world and one of the natural wonders in Namibia, the Fish River Canyon, on this flying tour. Take off from the Swakopmund airstrip, in the Namib Desert, and fly towards the Kuiseb Canyon running along the sea of flaming red and orange dunes. Look down at the landscape which resembles a golden sea dappled with red-orange triangular formations rising smoothly to meet the sky. Further ahead, you can spot, the awe-inspiring dunes at Sossusvlei.Rising to a height of 305 metres and stretching 480 kilometres along the Namibia Coast, the colours and shadows of these gigantic mountains of sand change by the hour from beige to rust-red to purple. On landing at the Fish River Canyon, which is 500 million years old, you drive up to a point in the north to enjoy a spectacular view of the 161 kilometre long gorge. If you are lucky, you could come across some small mammals like the rock-hopping Klipspringer Antelope, little dassies (rock hyrax) and baboons. Further on, you travel across the restricted area dotted with the remains of old diamond camps, towards Luderitz. Alternatively, you could land at this coastal town. A visit to the ghost town, Kolmanskop, is a must as it was once the richest towns in the world because of its diamond mines. In 1908, a railway worker had found a diamond here and this discovery had sparked off a diamond rush. Continuing over the ‘sea of sand’, you approach the shore at Conception Bay.Soaring along its coastline you will see the remains of a German passenger liner called Eduard Bohlen. Blended harmoniously with the powdery sands, it seems like the ship is sailing through the desert itself. Moving northward, you fly over the “Lange Wand”, a 500 feet high dune rising from the coastline. You are welcomed by a number of birds as the plane approaches Sandwich Harbour, a large saltwater lagoon, which is home to an incredible variety of birds and one of south Africa’s biggest bird sanctuaries. Travelling across the salt mines, you fly over the brilliant canvas of sand dunes meeting the Atlantic Ocean at Namibia’s only deep sea harbour, Walvis Bay. From the largest canyon to the highest dunes, from a ghost town to the only deep sea harbour, this vacation will let you appreciate the natural wonders in Namibia.
