See many birds like white Ibis and river tern at the Rananthittu Bird Sanctuary near Mysore
| Attractions and things to do - 2 Day Tour to Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary- Tour from Bangalore | |
|
Ranganathittu, 18 kms from Mysore, is a Bird Sanctuary that houses exotic birds. It is a group of six islets in the Kaveri River. The isolated islets and the abundance of aquatic insects during the monsoon make Ranganthittu a favourite gathering place for birds. Ranganthittu attained the status of a bird sanctuary in 1940, in a realisation of the dream of India’s noted ornithologist - Dr. Salim Ali-who, during his survey of the birds of Mysore, advocated the establishment of such a sanctuary. The sanctuary is now a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers and bird watchers. Some species of birds that have made Ranganthittu their home are spoonbills, open bill storks, darters, white Ibis, little cormorants, egret, heron, partridge, river tern, stone plougher and snake birds. Many of these birds migrate here annually from Siberia and North America, to nest and breed. Crocodiles basking in the sun are also a familiar sight.
