Steeped in history, Ecuador’s capital Quito is one of South America’s best preserved colonial cities. In fact, it was due to its rich cultural heritage that the historical centre in the old city was declared the first World Heritage Cultural Site by UNESCO in 1978. Visit the Independence Square, the Archbishop’s Palace, the renowned Metropolitan Cathedral and other samples of colonial art and architecture. Mark the zero latitude at the La Mitad Del Mundo (Middle of the World), just a few kilometres outside of Quito. Straddle the northern and southern hemispheres by standing on the famous red line that marks the Equator in Quito. Let some equator-style fun take over as you attempt to balance a raw egg on the head of a nail at the very centre of the earth (a feat actually possible only here!)
