Erice and Segesta |
Uncover the many layers of history in the Sicilian cities of Erice and Segesta
| Overview | |
Greek and Roman legends come to life in the ancient cities of Erice and Segesta.Best associated with the Gods, Venus and Neptune, these cities have an alluring mythical charm. Erice hosts the beautiful Venus Castle which reflects the unique and complicated history of Sicily. Constructed by the Normans in the 12th century, the castle was also once a temple to the goddess, Venus. Explore the idyllic town of Segesta’s colorful history. The setting for Virgil’s Aenid, the town hosts a number of magnificent Greek Doric structures from the 5th Century. Among these structures include a 36 column structure which has somehow managed to withstand the abuse from the frequent earthquakes in the region. Finally, enjoy the best culinary treats of modern Sicily as you savor the traditional almond sweets of the region.
