Set in the heart of Zulu country, Pietermaritzburg is a city of charm and dignity, at its loveliest in spring when masses of azaleas burst into bloom. When the first Voortrekkers arrived in 1837, they found a tranquil countryside graced by forests, hills and valleys. Today, numerous Victorian and Edwardian buildings, quaint pedestrian lanes and other landmarks reflect the substantial British contribution to the development of the town. Pietermaritzburg is abundantly filled with parks and gardens and with historic buildings, now protected as national monuments or museums, and has preserved much of its British colonial architecture and atmosphere. The 3,553ft high World's View offers a panoramic view of Pietermaritzberg. This is also the city that inspired Gandhi on his first Human Rights mission. Take this tour and you will get a glimpse of South Africa’s history in the ‘imperial city’ of Pietermaritzberg.
