Enjoy a tour of the spectacular Piazza San Marco where the iconic symbol of Venice – the Basilica di San Marco – stands. This beautiful 9th Century basilica is a brilliant example of Byzantine architecture and one of the prime attractions in the beautiful city of Venice. Opulent designs, gilded mosaics and a beautiful golden glow earn this edifice the title of Chiesa d'Oro - the church of gold. Also at the Piazza San Marco is the Doge’s palace, the seat of the government of Venice for centuries until Napoleon took over the city in 1797. The Palazzo Ducale is a superb example of Venetian Gothic architecture and visitors to the building can see the Great Council Hall, the Chamber of the Council of Ten, prison cells and other rooms. A must see is the famous Bridge of Sighs that connects the Doge's Palace with the state prisons. A tour of the Piazza San Marco is engaging as it takes you through the religious and administrative centres of Venice.
