The Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery and is spread over a group of six islets. The islets were formed when a dam was constructed across the Cauvery in the 1700s. The abundance of water and aquatic insects during the monsoons make Ranganthittu a favourite gathering place for birds. India’s noted ornithologist - Dr. Salim Ali- during his survey of the birds of Mysore, advocated the establishment of such a sanctuary and persuaded the Wodeyar kings of Mysore to declare the area a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is now a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers and bird watchers. Ranganthittu is home to spoonbills, open bill storks, darters, white Ibis, little cormorants, egret, heron, partridge, river tern, stone plougher and snake birds, (the Anhinga is a water bird which is also known as the snake bird because when it surfaces, all that shows is its long skinny neck and sharp beak. Many of these birds migrate here annually from Siberia and North America, to nest and breed.)
