Ouro Preto is one of the best conserved historic cities of Brazil. Founded at the end of the 17th century, Ouro Preto (Black Gold) was the centre of the gold rush. This city is filled with one of the largest collection of baroque churches in the world, and is listed as the Cultural Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO. Most of the stunning architecture in Ouro Preto is the handiwork of Brazilian-born architect and sculptor Aleijadinho. This charming, historic village continues to have the steep and narrow streets that still conserve the original cobblestone pavement and the profusion of baroque churches and religious architecture. Mariana, called the ‘enchanted city’, is a short distance from Ouro Preto, and for a short time was the capital of state of Minas Gerais. Walk down the streets of the city of Mariana, and see houses dating back to the 18th century with their balconies of wood, iron and soapstone. A sightseeing tour of Ouro Preto and Mariana is a great way to appreciate the architectural beauty of Brazil.
