Offbeat New York: Gay Gotham - Standard Tour |
Come to Gay Gotham and see art galleries and eateries in Chelsea, the centre of New York’s gay life
| Overview | |
Come to Gay Gotham and see New York City from a completely different perspective. New York City is the most diverse city in the world and people of all kinds receive a welcome, non-judgmental embrace. At Stonewall Place, near Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village, a plaque commemorates the riots that gave birth to the modern gay civil rights movement. Just east, on Christopher Street is the Oscar Wilde Bookshop, the world’s first gay and lesbian bookstore. A few blocks uptown, on 13th Street near 7th Avenue, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Community Centre hosts social, recreational, political, religious, and support meetings and events. Interestingly, Gotham was first used in reference to Manhattan by Washington Irving in the early 19th century. The word itself is English in origin and dates from the Middle Ages. Gotham, or Gotam, was the name of a real and often-ridiculed town in England, whose residents had a reputation for madness. In the early 1990s, Chelsea, just north of the West Village, became a centre of New York’s gay life. A weekend visit here might include the neighbourhood's art galleries, dinner at one of the dozens of restaurants lining 8th Avenue, and club-hopping.
