Wildlife, stunning natural wonders and game safaris makes this an ideal South African game reserve vacation. Set out from Johannesburg and travel to the 80,000 square kilometres Mpumalanga Province, also called ‘Paradise Country’, with lush vegetation, mountains, valleys and waterfalls. Continue to the historical town of Pilgrim’s Rest, a living testimony to South Africa’s gold mining past. The next day, travel to Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and explore Bourke’s Luck Potholes, fascinating cylindrical holes that were formed by swirling waters over millions of years. Set out on a game spotting safari in the 2 million hectares long Kruger National Park and spot some of the 147 mammal species like the Big Five, hippos, antelopes, zebras and giraffes. Continue to the mountain Kingdom of Swaziland and visit the Mlilwane Game Reserve that stretches 4,560 hectares north to south. With middleveld vegetation stretching up to granite peaks of Nyonyane Mountains in the south and the massive Usutu Forest on the western boundary, this reserve has some great game spotting opportunities. You could also take a guided walking tour, go mountain biking or horseback riding, at your own expense. Stay the night in Swazi beehive huts and get a flavour of living in the wilderness. Take a family safari tour into the land where the Dingiswayo and Shaka tribes used to hunt, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. World renowned for its white rhino conservation drive in the 1950’s and 60’s, Hluhluwe Game Reserve is now trying to save the black rhino. Take a game spotting safari and you could come across some of the Big Five and other animals like cheetahs, zebras, blue wildebeest, spotted hyenas and wild dogs. A visit to the cultural village here will bring you closer to the African tribe culture. Visit the 27 kilometres long, 4 kilometres wide and 400 metre deep Oribi Gorge, running along the forest-covered Mzimkulwana River and you can choose from activities like gorge swinging, abseiling and hiking. Continue to Umtata, the main town in the former Transkei region, the childhood home of Nelson Mandela and visit the museum that commemorates his achievements. Go game spotting in the 120,000 hectares Addo Elephant National Park, home to more than 300 elephants! Travel to the Western Cape and drive along the scenic Garden Route crossing towns like George, Mossel Bay and Victoria. Visit Little Karoo, also called the ‘Feather Capital’ of the world due to the large number of ostrich farms here. Visit the Ostrich Show Farm and watch the world-famous ostrich race. 26 kilometres from Oudsthoorn, visit the Cango Caves, discovered in 1780. One of the natural wonders in South Africa, you will see stalactites and stalagmites inside these calcite caves. Head towards Cape Town and visit the 1086 metres Table Mountain, its flat ‘table like’ summit stretching nearly three kilometres! Drive along the Atlantic coastline and a mountainous route with 114 turns that leads to the striking Chapmans Peak. End the tour with a visit to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. This South African game reserve vacation will satisfy all your fantasies of exploring the wilds of Africa!
