Martin Luther termed Erfut the “city of towers.” With its 25 parish churches, 15 religious foundations and 10 chapels, the name still resonates over the steeples of the cityscape. Luther, the father of Protestantism, was schooled in Eruft and became a monk here at the magnificent Augustinian Monastery. Gaze up the sky-piercing tower at the Cathedral of St. Mary Domberg and visit an early market square, where villagers once gathered to buy fresh fish and trade stories. See one of the most faithfully-maintained baroque fortresses in central Europe and traverse the Merchant’s Bridge, which features the longest stretch of inhabited buildings on any bridge in Europe. A return train ticket valid for the whole day lets you explore the city on your own time after the tour is over.
