Explore the wilds of Africa as you go on hot air balloon and game-spotting safaris in the 1510 square kilometre Masai Mara National Reserve. Set against the backdrop of the Esoit Oloololo Escarpment and dissected by the Mara River, the reserve is famous for its variety of wildlife and seasonal wildebeest migrations. Travel to the Il Moran Governors Camp, situated in the prime wildlife spotting area and the home base for this four-day safari. Set out on a late afternoon game spotting safari in the reserve and lookout for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, hippos and elusive leopards. The next day, as the sun rises over the region, set out on a balloon safari over the reserve which encompasses the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem, appreciating the beauty of the 'sea of grass on plains'. Keep your binoculars handy and you could see big cats pouncing on some unsuspecting prey. After a morning of wildlife spotting, enjoy a delicious bush breakfast. Another option is to set out on a game safari through the reserve and follow it up with breakfast at camp.Later, spend some time just walking around camp and enjoy the quiet of the savanna or relax in the luxuriously appointed tents. Situated on high cliffs along the Mara River, you will get a panoramic view of the savanna and acacia trees. You could even get a close-up view of elephants, hippos and buffaloes that come for a drink or graze near the camp. In the afternoon, carry your camera along for a late afternoon game safari where you could come across antelopes, Grant's gazelle, Masai giraffes, baboons and spotted hyenas. If you're visiting the reserve between July and October, you'll be in for a real treat as you watch the wildebeest migration. The sight of hundreds of columns of this antelope (also called the 'gnu') is something you will not forget for days to come.
