For a brief time, Macedonia was the most powerful state in the near East, and its King, the immortal Alexander the Great, conquered most of the known world.

Take a ferry to the ruins of Philippi, built by Alexander’s father, where a knowledgeable guide recalls the heights, lulls, and declines of Macedonian history.

Drive to the small village of Alistrati, where you tour a massive cave, looking up at the fearsome stalactites that hang from the ceiling.
