The calm backwaters that run parallel to the Arabian Sea are a peaceful sanctuary, an escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities. Palm and coconut trees line the interconnected waterways and watch the local people living by the backwaters go on with their lives. Houseboats make their way past small villages with mosques, churches, temples and schools, and villagers going about their daily chores, and tiny settlements where people live on narrow spits of reclaimed land only a few metres away.
