It is also home to the world's largest population of little spotted kiwi. Kapiti Island Lodge on this small island offers birders a magical and rare opportunity to experience free contact with an unsurpassed range of New Zealand native and endemic flora and fauna Enjoy a guided day walk on Kapiti Island and revel in the beauty of this sanctuary. The closed sanctuary is managed by the Department of Conservation and is a 15 minute boat ride off the Paraparaumu (pronounced 'pah-ra-pah-ra-oo-moo') beach. Since the birds on the island have no natural predators, they are not afraid of visitors, and if you're lucky, you will most likely be able to spot quite a large variety of birds.
