Historical and Cultural Tour of Jaisalmer |
Visit the fort and mansions of Jaisalmer on this historical sightseeing tour
| Overview | |
Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, popularly known as the Golden City of India because of its gleaming golden sandstone monuments, offers interesting sightseeing attractions. Jaisalmer Fort, built on top of Trikuta Hill, offers breathtaking views of the desert of Rajasthan. Its architecture, especially the seven-storey palace, is fascinating. Within the fort lie ancient Jain temples dating from the 12th to 16th centuries. The ornate carvings have an extraordinary feel to them because of the soft sandstone. It is interesting to note that almost a quarter of the town’s population lives within the fort even today. Jaisalmer is also home to magnificent havelis or mansions built by the wealthy merchants. These sculpted sandstone buildings are a work of art: admire the elaborate architecture with carved pillars, murals and paintings which were made using a lot of gold. Discover the historical and architectural splendour of Jaisalmer on this tour.
