The Great Wall is a symbol of Chinese civilization, and one of the enduring wonders that the Chinese people have created. Badaling Great Wall, listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, is situated in Yanqing County, over 70 kilometres north of Beijing and is the most well-preserved section of the Great Wall. Built during the Ming Dynasty, this section with an average altitude of over 1,000 meters was an ancient military stronghold. It is a magnificent creation and the views it provides are truly breathtaking. The Ming Tombs are located about 50 kms northwest of Beijing at the foot of the Tianshou Mountains. Thirteen emperors of the Ming Dynasty are buried here in a complex that spreads some 40 sq.kms. The Ming Tombs form the most extensive burial complex of any Chinese dynasty. The entrance to the Ming Tombs is the seven-kilometre long shen dao (Spirit Way). This Spirit or Sacred Way leading to the Ming Tombs is flanked on both sides by carvings of human and animal figures.
