Colonial Treasures and Silver Mines: Excursions to Sucre and Potosi |
From the ‘city of four names’ to the silver mines of Potosi- Bolivia’s heritage will captivate you.
| Overview | |
Travel back in time as you explore the colonial architecture of the UNESCO World Heritage cities of Sucre and Potosi. Set in a picturesque valley and surrounded by mountains, Sucre or ‘city of four names’ has a rich cultural heritage bequeathed by Spanish colonizers. Walk down streets dotted with white colonial buildings and red tiled roofs to the church of La Recoleta. For a flavor of the Bolivian War for Independence, a tour of the House of Independence is worth a visit. The city of Potosi will give you a different perspective of Bolivia. Situated at the foothills of the ‘rich hills’ of Cerro Rico, Potosi grew in fame and fortune for its silver mines. Absorb its dynamic history as you wander along lanes scattered with old churches and the remnants of colonial architecture. A visit to the mine in Cerro Hill and the Mint house Museum will leave you with a sense of tragedy and wonder at Potosi’s intriguing past.
