Madaba, or Medeba of the Bible, is situated about 30 kilometres south of Amman on the 5,000 year old Kings Highway. Aptly called the City of Mosaics, Medaba is most famous for its St George Greek Orthodox Church, and Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. The remains of Roman roads and civic architecture are also evident all around. On the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church lies the 6thcentury Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land showing the region from Jerusalem to the Nile.
