Central Thailand contains some of the country’s most impressive Buddhist and Hindu ruins. Ayuthaya and Kanchanburi were important trade centres from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The ruins of Ayuthaya are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region has some dramatic modern history attached to it including the infamous Death Railway of World War II.
