Historical Sightseeing Tour of Miri City |
Go shopping, visit one of Asia's largest Taoist temples and see Sarawak's first oil well in Miri
| Overview | |
Miri is a city in northern Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, and the birthplace of the petroleum industry in Sarawak. The town of Miri developed rapidly from a small village in the 1800s into the very cosmopolitan and modern town it is today largely due to the discovery of oil when it was first discovered in 1910. Visit the 'Grand Old Lady', Miri's first oil well, located atop Canada Hill, which produced some 660,000 barrels of oil. It has now been gazetted as a Historical Monument. One of the biggest Taoist Temples in South East Asia - Lian Hua San (Lotus Hill) Temple - is in Miri. Don't miss the bustling Farmer's Market, commonly known as "Tamu", where one can see a huge variety of local vegetables, fruits and other food brought in by the natives and local farmers from around Miri.
