Laced with vineyards and dotted with wineries, the two grape growing cities of Mozia and Marsala boast one obvious product, but also host an array of sites that you cannot find at your local grocer. Once a stronghold for the Phoenicians, during a trip to Mozia, you will uncover ancient ruins and a thriving modern life. Nestled in the coast of Trapani, Mozia possesses an array of artifacts from Phoenician and Punic civilizations. At the neighboring Salt Museum, you will be amazed by the large role that Sicily played in transporting salt to the center of the Holy Roman Empire. Then you will make your way to the charming Marsala. Dubbed by Arab traders as Mars ‘el Allah, or “Port of God,” the relaxed wine drinking culture of Marsala indicates that not much has changed since the fifth century. Here, you will be able to take in the scenic panorama, as well as sample a little of the sweet dessert flavor that makes this town famous.
