With the cool breeze caressing your skin and stunning views of the Indian Ocean, begin your exploration of the northern section of Kenya’s Mombasa Island. Travel north and you will get a chance to admire the picture perfect setting of the Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu, Kikambala and Vipingo beaches. Visit the ruins of the 13th century Swahili village of Gede, lying south of Malindi. Nestled in thick forest, this village remained hidden away from historic texts as well. Explore its vast compound and you’ll come across palaces, houses and mosques built with coral, sand and plaster, with a blend of Swahili and Arabic architecture. Visit the National Museum and examine displays of the excavated Chinese Ming porcelain, glass and Persian earthenware. You could also come across Syke's Monkeys and the Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew. Continuing towards the Swahili city-state of Malindi, the first thing to strike you will be the stone cross placed by Vasco da Gama in 1499 and the quaint Portuguese church next to it. Running along some of the most picturesque beaches like Kisite-Mpunguti and Kiunga, you will get an opportunity to explore some of the most spectacular coral beds. Take a tour in a glass bottom boat and you’ll see a variety of marine animals and colourful coral reefs. Tuck into some Italian food at one of the restaurants and head towards the snake farm, showcasing a number of venomous snakes. Located close to the snake farm is the falconry that has a variety of caged birds of prey. This tour of the Mombasa Island in Kenya will give you a sense of its culture, history, scenic beaches and wildlife.
