No trip to Ecuador can be complete without a memorable open-air train ride on the Chiva Express, the ‘bus on rails’. Adapted from an old-fashioned Latin American bus, the Chiva Express is a single coach train. The highlight of this wonderful carriage is its roof which has comfortable seating, allowing an obstruction-free viewing of the spectacular scenery of Ecuador. This one day trip departs from Quito to the Cotopaxi National Park, along the Avenue of the Volcanoes with spectacular views of the Andes mountains. Enjoy the ecosystems of the park's windswept moors and ‘ride the roof’ of the unique Chiva Express on the way back. Surrounding the towering Cotopaxi Volcano, the Cotopaxi National Park is an ecological sanctuary and a huge attraction for nature lovers because of the treeless vegetation of the Andean moorlands or paramo. Bird species includes the Andean gull, ducks, several species of hummingbirds and with some luck, the condor. This trip to the Cotopaxi National Park and the train ride on the open air Chiva Express will make this vacation in Ecuador a wonderful experience.
