The 500-acre complex of Chan Chan is the largest pre-Hispanic mud brick city in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the capital of the ancient Chimu Empire. Hailed as the find of the 20th century, the Moche tomb of Sipan is the richest burial site discovered in the Western Hemisphere, and is a short distance east of the modern city of Chiclayo. Finely crafted gold artifacts and ceramics recovered from these complexes are on display at the Museum of the Royal Tombs - one of the finest in South America.
