Doesn’t the thought of a desert and an ocean existing side by side sound staggering? Visit Africa’s largest and world’s fourth largest ecosystem, the Namib Naukluft Park, and this is exactly what you will see. Spreading over 1,600 kilometres this park runs along the Atlantic Coast. Start your tour from Windhoek traversing across the Spreetshoogte Pass and Solitaire to a lodge on the border of Namib Desert. Offering a panoramic view of enormous sand dunes, this picture perfect postcard is a sight you will not forget for days to come. Continuing to Sossusvlei, an orange wavy sea of sand dunes, beckons you towards its sheer size and vibrant colours. Towering to a height of 305 metres and expanding 480 kilometres along the Namibia Coast, they are the highest dunes in the world. As you begin climbing its spongy terrain you can see the beautiful patterns formed by your footsteps on its unspoilt sands. The vibrant colours of the dunes will remind you of spring, the older the dune the darker it is. As though splashed with colours, you climb dunes ranging from burnt orange to blood red to deepest mauve. On reaching the ‘vlei’, a shallow depression (sometimes) filled with water, predominantly during the exceptional rainy season, encased by the lofty dunes, here you can enjoy some delicious breakfast. 60 kilometres away stands the steep Sesriem Canyon that got its name from the early Afrikaner trekkers who had to use six leather thongs to get the bucket to reach the water far below. Being covered from all ends, the water gets stored well into the dry season as well. At dusk you get the choice to either drive up to the spectacular Marble Mountains or just sit back and enjoy the million hues that light the sky. Lose yourself in the artistic beauty of Sossusvlei as you explore the Namib-Naukluft Park region on this vacation.
