An hour's drive from Johannesburg and nestled in the Magaliesberg Mountains, is the Elephant Sanctuary, a haven for African elephants rescued from the jungle. It is surrounded by natural indigenous bush and is home to impala, klipspringer, baboons, porcupine, caracal, leopard, a host of other small mammals, 350 bird species and of course, the magnificent African elephants. Enjoy a unique experience as you wander around the sanctuary and watch elephants feeding and bathing in mud pools as friendly and informative guides highlight interesting facts about elephant families, their habits and the bush. The focus is on education and you can choose from a number of programmes that range from a team building ‘obstacle course’ with elephants to mountain walks and swims with the elephants. Offering a unique interaction with African elephants, Elephant Sanctuary makes a great day trip from Johannesburg.
