Cultural and Scenic Tour of Delhi – Surajkund Lake |
Take a scenic tour to the outskirts of Delhi to discover the idyllic surroundings of Surajkund
| Overview | |
Surajkund Lake is located on the border of Delhi and Haryana. This idyllic retreat is less than an hour’s drive from Delhi’s city centre. This large and important reservoir was built by the 10th century Rajput king – Surajpal Tomar. It is believed that a temple was built in honour of the sun (Suraj) god, which is how the lake got its name. Today it is a picnic spot for the residents of Delhi looking to get away from the city.Fed by the annual rains the lake is a serene and beautiful spot. For the first two weeks in February the area plays host to the world famous Surajkund Crafts Mela. The site then transforms into a vibrant, colourful and exotic place.Brightly coloured traditional costumes jostle for attention with hand made items from all over India add to the magic of this wonderful ancient locale.
