Learn about Africa’s history, culture and traditions as you visit Inanda township. Popular names like Rev. John Dube, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi are an integral part of its history. The Ohlange Institute, founded by the first president of African National Congress, Rev. John Dube, is where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the first South African democratic elections in 1994 here. It was at the Phoenix settlement that Mahatma Gandhi developed his philosophy of passive resistance. Now a museum, his home is dedicated as a monument to peace and justice. The Inanda Seminary, one of the oldest African private schools for girls, started by the missionary Mary Edwards in 1869, is a "must visit". A visit to the Ebuhleni village, centre of the religious order of the Shembe Church, gives you a chance to meet the landless and disinherited in their shelters. The township of Cato Manor is filled with colourful temples of worship, markets and schools. This Heritage Trail tour is perfect for exploring South African culture.
