Maropeng, situated in the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng province, South Africa, is a world-acclaimed tourist destination, spread over a 47,000 hectare valley with patches of shrubs and trees. A visit to the state-of-the-art Maropeng Museum takes you on an incredible journey back in time, literally millions of years in evolution. Maropeng, a Setswana word meaning ‘the place where we once lived’, has witnessed three million years of human dwelling. Have a surreal experience on a boat ride in its underground lake where you can experience the elements first hand in a controlled environment. The world-famous Sterkfontein Caves are 10 kilometres from Maropeng and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here that Dr Robert Broom found the very first adult "ape-man" in 1936 and where, in 1947, a well-preserved skull of a female Plesianthropus (nicknamed "Mrs Ples") was uncovered. In addition to about 500 human skulls, jaws, teeth and skeletal fossils, some thousands of animal fossils have also been found in this area. Embark on this special journey that takes you to the very origins of mankind in this Cradle of Humankind.
