In fact, it was due to its rich cultural heritage that the historical centre in the old city was declared the first World Heritage Cultural Site by UNESCO in 1978. As the historical centre with its charming colonial houses and churches became too small, a 'new city' was built with modern skyscrapers, broad avenues and urban parks. This sightseeing excursion offers the best of old and modern Quito and showcases a city that is well-known for its impressive architectural heritage.
