Cerro Rico Mine Tour |
History and tragedy are closely intertwined in Potosi’s mines, a journey you will never forget.
| Overview | |
"The entire town is a cultural standout - from the 400 year old legacy of mining to a poignant lesson in world history." -Bobby Gillis Potosi’s silver mines and colonial legacy are intricately linked as you will discover on this tour to the mines of the ‘rich hill’, Cerro Rico. Established in 1545 when Spanish conquistadors discovered Cerro Rico’s wealth, the mines furnished Spanish excesses and made it the ‘Invincible Armada’. According to legend, enough silver was taken from its mines to build a bridge between the two countries! When you visit the Indian run mine of the former Bolivian mine company, you will be struck by the pathos of the mines that gave the Spanish its muscle power and killed thousands in the process. Low ceilings and muddy passages still characterize the mines, the sole livelihood for miners who earn a pittance. With the opportunity to witness a working mine, this tour will leave you with unforgettable memories of Potosi’s fortune and tragedy.
