France’s elite architects erected some of the country’s most immortal structures during the French Renaissance as painting and sculpture flourished, scientists held theories of the dark ages up to the microscope, and explorers set sail for the New World. Walk through the ornate corridors of the Chateau of Chenonceau and admire the commanding symmetry of the Chateau of Cheverny. Tour the estate where Leonardo da Vinci, the very exemplar of a Renaissance man, spent his twilight years in the company of a king and perhaps you’ll see the Chateau of Chambord, which some say was partly modeled on da Vinci’s design. You can also decide to stand in the shadow of the awe-inspiring castle in Amboise, which rises tall and surreal over a quaint market town.
