A tour of the Borobudur Temple in eastern Java gives you a glimpse into the Buddhist culture and tradition. Built on a hilltop in the 8th century by the Cailendra dynasty, the temple is a miniature model of the universe. Starting from the base of the shrine, you ascend five levels, each of which represents a state of being and its Buddhist interpretation. The base represents living in a ‘world of desire’, a hellish state according to Buddhism. Moving up, it shows one how to conquer desire with illustrations from the life of Buddha and his previous incarnations. Proceed to the ‘world of formlessness’ where heavily ornamented passages take you to the round summit. At the summit, you will see saints and Buddhists meditating in a peaceful environment. This is one Javanese excursion you will remember for time to come!
