Visit the Summer Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the largest and best-preserved imperial garden in China. The Summer Palace has graceful landscapes and magnificent constructions. This archetypal Chinese garden is ranked amongst the most noted and classical gardens of the world. Composed mainly of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, the Summer Palace occupies an area of 726.5 acres,three quarters of which is water. Guided by nature, artists designed the gardens exquisitely so that visitors would enjoy marvellous views. Construction was begun in the early 12th century by the Jing dynasty and it became the official summer home of numerous emperors through the centuries - a retreat from the main imperial palace now known as the Palace Museum (or 'Forbidden City').
