Wedged between snowy summits and lush forests, the stark beauty of the Andean ‘paramo’ grasslands will captivate you on this tour to the Antisana Ecological Reserve.Situated high in the Central Highlands on the slopes of the imposing 5705-meter high Antisana volcano (Ecuador’s fourth largest volcano), the Reserve is home to the unique flora and fauna of the Andean ‘paramo’ (at an altitude of 3600-4800 meters). A thrilling ride 4000 meters above sea level will give you a powerful sense of Ecuador’s dramatic landscape as you traverse rolling meadows, plunging ravines and lakes bordered by ‘pillow moss’, hump-like pillows of vegetation. Swooping Andean gulls, hummingbirds and ducks fill the air with their shrill cries as you revel in the sheer expanse and beauty of the environs. Count yourself lucky if the magnificent Andean condor decides to put in an appearance as it swoops down on unsuspecting carrion. The region itself is surrounded by pristine rivers, huge vegetation and beautiful waterfalls. Multi-coloured orchids and bromeliads carpet vast areas of the reserve, making for an exquisite sight.
