The city of Cordoba is famous for its popular historical sites such as the spectacular Mezquita and the Jewish Quarter. One of the finest examples of Islamic architecture, the Mezquita is a beautiful mosque built by Abd ar-Rahman I. Its shimmering golden mosaics and an endless row of red-and-white striped arches make it a visual delight. The Jewish Quarter is maze of narrow streets filled small plazas, white-washed houses with flowery window boxes and wrought-iron doorways opening up to plant-decked patios. The well restored 14th century Synagogue in Cordoba is yet another must-see. It contains ancient Hebrew inscriptions and intricate Mudejar patterns in stucco.
