Alkmaar is an ancient city, famous for its cheese market which attracts tourists in droves. On this tour, explore the market, see cheese carriers in their traditional costumes and cheese piled high on the cobblestone square. Learn more about the old market way of life, where bidders traditionally compete by clapping their hands and seal a deal with a stern clap. Once a buyer has bought the cheese, men in white uniforms carry the wheels of cheese to a 14th century Weigh House to tally the bill. This tour also includes a visit to Schermerhorn, a village famous for its old windmills, and the medieval town of Edam where you will visit a cheese factory.
