Travel to the Samburu Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve and explore the African wilds on this safari. Set out from the capital city of Nairobi and travel 315 kilometres north to Samburu Game Reserve. Set against the backdrop of the red tabletop mountain ‘Lololokwi’ and lying on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, this 104 square kilometre reserve will captivate you with its dramatic landscape and wildlife. Keep your binoculars handy for a late afternoon wildlife safari and spot elephants, reticulated giraffes, Somali ostriches, Beisa oryxes, gerenuks and the endangered Grevy’s zebras. In the evening, relax at a riverside lodge, an ideal place to spot lions that come for a drink at the river. Spend the next day exploring the landscape of the region as you set out on safaris and keep an eye out for kingfishers, vultures, tawny eagles and the sun-bird that are seen in this region. Continue to the Mountain Lodge in Mt Kenya forest for a unique game watching experience. Situated at a height of 2,195 metres on the slopes of Mt Kenya, you’ll be surrounded by the quiet of the rainforest. Later, trek through the rainforest with a friendly guide and in the evening look out for animals that come for a drink to the waterhole. The next day, travel to Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley. A sea of pink flamingos and a variety of birds will have you reaching for your camera. White rhinos lazing around in the lake, buffaloes and waterbucks are also a common sight. Further adventures await you at the Masai Mara National Reserve. Set against the backdrop of the Esoit Oloololo Escarpment and dissected by the Mara River, the reserve is famous for its variety of wildlife and seasonal wildebeest migrations. Set out on a late afternoon game spotting safari in the reserve and look out for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, hippos and the elusive leopards. Carry your camera along for game-spotting safaris the next day where you could come across antelopes, Grant’s gazelle, Masai giraffes, baboons and spotted hyenas. If you’re visiting the reserve between July and October, you’ll be in for a real treat as you watch the wildebeest migration. The sight of hundreds of columns of this antelope (also called the ‘gnu’) is something you will not forget for days to come. Kenya’s most popular reserve because of the sheer variety of wildlife, Masai Mara will be the perfect end to this vacation!
