Explore the beauty of the Toraja Highlands, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Indonesia. In Makassar, visit Fort Rotterdam which was built in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company as a protected gateway to conduct its spice trade. Tucked amid craggy peaks and fertile plateaus to the south of Sulawesi, Toraja Highlands fascinate tourists. Find out about the strange burial customs of the Torajans as you visit Lemo. You’ll see a cliff displaying ancestral sculptures and hanging graves. These rock tombs are where their dead are buried. The most intriguing are the royal tombs which have long balconies carved on the rock, full of wooden dolls (called tau tau) dressed in similar clothes as the deceased. This is their way of paying tribute to the dead. Another popular tourist landmark in Toraja is Londa village famous for its ceremonial burial place. Visit the village of Ketu Kesu and learn the art of wood carving from the locals. Visit Batutumonga village which is situated at an altitude of 1,700 metres in the central highlands of Sulawesi and appreciate the beauty of the countryside - its mountains, vast stretches of rice fields, coffee and bamboo forests. Interestingly, most Toraja houses have big boat shaped roofs facing north. Another popular site in Toraja is the quaint village of Pallawa. Look out for Tongkonan houses with traditional architecture, rice barns and granaries. A stroll along this quiet village will refresh you.
